Close Ratio Gear Sets - FYI

I originated close ratio gear sets for the VW in 1963. My vast years of experience and an uncompromising commitment, enables me to provide the strongest, largest selection of quality close ratio gear sets and related transaxle parts for the air cooled VW available anywhere. Berg gears are 8620 or 9310 steel, shave cut and crowned, heat treated, with all bearing surfaces ground for proper concentricity. This combination assures the strongest, quietest performance gear sets you can buy. Application for full syncro trans 1961 through about 1972-1/2, (serial F113 2297 983). Will not fit the 3.78 mainshafts with splined hub made after 1972-1/2. If you have a splined mainshaft you can replace it with our GB 662U, any of the GB 663 mainshaft or see LA TRANS020 to modify your VW 3.78 mainshaft. These conversions require the use of a stock VW keyed hub (VWB113-311-309) and early gear carrier, (61-72-1/2) or the adapter bearing VWA020-311-123B that fits the late carrier housing with the smaller hole for the modified mainshaft.
You will also need VW 020-311-187 snap ring and VWB080-311-151.1 gear thrust washer for 4th. Then our 3rd & 4th close ratio gears can be installed in these later gear boxes. Some 1973-1/2 and later pinion shafts also may need to have a clearance step ground on to them to fit 3rd gear. This can be simply done on a sander or grinder.
Note 1: Our street/race gear sets are made of 8620. This is far stronger than the factory gear material. All 3rd and 4th gear ratios with "SD" and "SD-FTC" (made by FTC) following the ratio in the description are our SUPER DUTY, 9310 close grained aircraft quality steel with less pitch and greater tooth root. These provide the strongest gears available today for a VW. Having this extreme high strength, from this design, will make more noise and may not be quiet enough, as it is not recommended for every daily driven street applications.
I have used our regular heavy duty 8620 steel gears in our 1725 pound, low 11 second race car for the last 20 years with only one gear failure, and Gary's 191 HP street/strip car with no failures to date. Race cars with turbos or off-road cars should use the SUPER DUTY gears (marked with SD).
Note 2: Again, all of our gear sets are for the key type mainshafts and will not fit 1972-1/2 sedan or IRS bus gear boxes with splined mainshafts. Read previous information on how to convert.
