Technical Tip

I am often asked, "What can be done if the belt is too loose and all of the shims are out?" First, loosen the strap and the screws on the side of the fan housing. Raise up the alternator or generator and put a thin piece of aluminum between it and the stand. Some people use pop cans, however, you will need more than one layer to achieve enough thickness or they buy shim stock from their auto parts supplier. When the appropriate amount has been achieved tighten the strap and then the screws in the side of the fan housing and you now have belt adjustment available again.
Anytime you change pulleys or have the strap loose on the alternator or generator always look from the side of the engine and make sure the belt is straight. You can make slight adjustments by simply moving the alternator or generator in or out. Always spin the alternator or generator to be sure the fan is not rubbing. If this will not align the pulley you may need to move the pulley out on the alternator or generator. This can be accomplished with our GB 438 shim. Unfortunately, I do not know of anyway to move it forward. VW has made different alternator or generator offsets on the pulley to work with specific crank pulleys so you may need to check out the different alternator or generator pulleys if confronted with such a problem.
