FYI

VW air-cooled engines have suffered from cam bearing thrust surface wear from the beginning of the 50 HP engine (1966). This is because they increased the angle of the cam gear teeth to provide longer life when heavier valve springs were added. The problem was cured in 1967 when VW made and installed a special copper impregnated thrust bearing. This was fine for a completely stock engine, however, when higher performance cams and springs were added we found that we needed to install two of these copper-faced bearings to eliminate premature cam bearing replacement.
