The factory stock VW rocker arm side thrust clips often break, allowing the rocker arms to move down the shaft. This does not occur too often when a stock cam and stock springs are used, however, it is practically assured when more spring pressure and/or a high lift faster ramp camshaft is used. When this clip breaks it can often cause a rocker arm or shaft to break, or a pushrod to bend rupturing a pushrod tube and causing an oil leak. Sometimes the broken part will drain back into the bottom of the engine before you can shut it down. It may just bounce around inside the engine and nick things up, however I have seen them get into the oil pump and cause complete engine failure. Not only is this a problem but the valve train is far more noisy with the stock thrust spring washers and these should always be replaced with solid washers. Berg bolt together rockers shafts were first developed in 1969 to permanently solve this and broken shaft problems. They are mandatory when more valve spring pressure or high performance camshafts are used. We manufacture our exclusive high strength rocker arm shaft and spacers in house to assure you of proper fit and quality. The shafts are made of 8620 alloy steel with oiling grooves, standard 5/16-24 threaded ends, rough ground to size so proper heat treatment can be done, heat treated, and precision ground to finish size. This two step grinding process is far more expensive, however provides a far stronger product that out lives all others. They also feature long life steel spacers with exclusive set screws (not aluminum which wears out quickly), to lock the spacer in place so loads cannot be transferred from one rocker to the other, that are the correct length for proper spacing between the center rockers, steel shims, special made Berg HD steel washers (again not aluminum which wears out quickly) and grade 5 bolts to bolt it all together on the ends. All of this provides proper setting of rocker arm side clearance so your rockers pivot separately in a true straight arc, without side movement. This quiets the valve train and assures full valve lift. The bolt together ends eliminate all of the weak snap on clips and our super strong shafts withstand the rigors of your stock or high performance engine requirements. Supplied with all of the needed parts and Berg exclusive copyrighted instructions. Furnished with the required 0.015", 0.030", 0.060" shims you can make virtually any thrust adjustment. Don't be fooled by people charging more for less or inferior copies that do not fit properly, break or have aluminum spacers. Insist on genuine Gene Berg bolt together, skin packed rocker shaft kits with Berg copyrighted instructions! Originated by Gene Berg in 1969. Made in USA by Gene Berg Enterprises. |
