This ingenious Berg adapter replaces the factory bus intermediate housing and coverts it back to the standard reliable sedan design shift rods, forks, bearings, shafts, nose cone, hockey stick, etc. Yes, this requires complete disassembly of the gear box by a competent trans builder. You install all of the sedan selector rods, forks etc. onto the bus gear stack and that bolts right onto the bus IRS trans case (with the sedan nose cone it bolts into a sedan chassis), with the shift rod hooking up just like it did stock. This is achieved without cutting up the car, using flimsy offset couplers or mounting an off-road shifter box on top of the tunnel. The most wonderful attribute is that you can speed shift it without missing shifts or fear of the shift rails coming unhooked. Nothing to beef up. Naturally, the drag racer should use the proper clutch/flywheel combination, reliable shifter, and make the internal conversion to pro rings, eliminating all of the brass syncros, clips, etc., for full power shifting. The Berg adapter is also far stronger and will provide longer service without wear as compared to the original housing. This is due to the superior strength and wearability of the high strength, heat treated aircraft aluminum rather than the magnesium material VW used. The reason magnesium is used in the production part is because it is lighter and can be machined without heat treatment or coolant. Further, it is far cheaper for mass production products and will provide adequate longevity when used for stock applications. The magnesium simply does not have the strength required to withstand high loads and wear created by high HP loading, drag race starts, or abuse as this part does. |
